Pearson Test of English, acronymed as PTE is an English proficiency test that evaluates a candidate’s writing, reading and listening skills. It is devised to assess and validate the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The test has mainly 3 versions –

  1. PTE Academic
  2. PTE General
  3. PTE Young Learners

The most popular test which is majoritarily taken is The Pearson Test of English Academic, which is an English language test which is designed to assess the readiness of non-native English speakers to participate in a university-level English language instruction program. Pearson created PTE Academic in response to demand from institutions, government and other organizations for a more accurate way of testing non – native English language students who enter the English-speaking academic world. It is a computer-based test that is trusted by universities, colleges and governments around the globe. The duration of the exam is 3 hours, where the candidates have to attempt 130 questions. After the test is given the candidates shall receive their results in a span of 48 hours.

PTE Registration

PTE test registration doesn’t have any strict requirements but the candidate needs to be 18 years of age while registering. In case somebody is not, that person has to show their parent’s or guardian’s consent form to register. Those who wish to appear for the examination need to pay around INR 14,700 as registration fees and one can register for the test through the official website (pearsonpte.com) by creating an account and enabling PTE login with that. PTE exams were temporarily shut due to the coronavirus pandemic but the good news is the tests have resumed again in countries like Australia, India and China in smaller batches.

After logging in to the PTE official website, the candidate needs to:

  1. The first and foremost step is to fill out the necessary details like name, address, contact , date of birth and more
  2. PTE booking can be done by clicking on “Schedule this exam’ and then select a specific location
  3. There will be a list of available PTE exam dates, the candidates should select a particular date at his or her convenience. Booking will be successful once payment of the PTE exam fee is done

An important thing to remember here is that, for Indians, it is obligatory as a part of the PTE requirements to include a passport without which the test cannot be taken. The PTE scorecard is obtained within 5 working days.

PTE Exam Cancellation Fees

Candidates who decide not to pursue their PTE Academic test after booking their exam online have time until 14 calendar days before their test date to claim a full refund. Candidates who cancel the test, with less than 14 calendar days, but at least 7 calendar days before their test date will receive a partial refund of 50% of the test fee paid. However, no refunds would be provided to candidates for cancelling the exam less than 7 calendar days before the exam. Candidates should note that cancellation and reschedule policy does not include your test date.

PTE Rescheduling Fees

Candidates who plan to reschedule the test, with less than 14 calendar days, but at least 7 full calendar days before their test date will be required to pay 50% of the test fee. No refunds will be provided on rescheduling the exam less than 7 calendar days before the exam. Candidates should note that the reschedule

The policy does not include your test date.

Exam pattern for The Pearson Test of English Academic

The PTE academic exam pattern consists of mainly 3 broad divisions, which test the 4 main skills of English – Reading, PTE Listening, PTE Speaking, and PTE writing. PTE Speaking and PTE writing exams are taken together. The PTE results are based on the scoring system of the Global Scale of English. A Pro tip for the candidates is to attempt mock tests to fully comprehend the exam pattern.

Section 1 –  Speaking & Writing, Duration –  77 to  93 minutes

Section 2 –  Reading,  Duration – 32 to 41 minutes

  5. Multiple-choice, choose single answer
  6. A 10-minute break is optional

Section 3 –  Listening, Duration – 45 to 57 minutes

Eligibility criteria for PTE

There aren’t any specific eligibility criteria set by the Pearson PLC Group in terms of age or educational qualification, almost everyone can apply. However, anyone planning to give the PTE academic exam has to be at least 16 years old at the time of appearing for the test. The candidates who are below 18 years of age need to submit a consent form signed by their parents or guardians for appearing for the test.
